Knockdown Desk

This maple desk is modeled loosely on the Hancock desk from Room and Board. This desk is a bit smaller: 47" long by 25" wide.

The legs and stretchers are removable; the legs are attached with corner brackets as on the laundry table, and the stretchers are attached with connector bolts into threaded inserts embedded in the stretchers:

The locator dowels prevent the stretchers from twisting and simplify assembly. When everything is tightened, the desk is rock solid. The illustrated instructions give assembly details.

The top is maple plywood trimmed with 1"x1 3/16" solid maple. The rest of the desk is solid maple, except the drawer box and internal supports, which are poplar. The finishing details are similar to those for the dresser: two coats of dye, one coat of sanding sealer, one coat of toner (brown dye in lacquer), two coats of gloss lacquer, and two coats of satin lacquer.
